Its strange to me how so few people refused or "slipped away" from doing this deadly job. It really shows how peer pressure and pressure to conform can really play a role in life. No one who refused to do the killings was ever severely punished, they were assigned a different duty. But their peers then viewed them as cowardly. Can you really get so caught up in something, that you lose your morals. None of these men were killing people before this, not even people who pissed them off. And now they are killing innocent people, even children. They were hunting Jewish people like they were animals, its disgusting.
I think something like this drives you to think what would you do in this situation? Is it easier to just go with the flow, to do whatever everyone else is doing? It takes a truly strong and confident person to go against the norm. And while I'm sure everyone outside this situation would like to assume that they wouldn't do such a thing, looking at what happened- a majority of people followed and just did what they were told, to scared to stand up for themselves and for other people.
It also led me to think what would have happened if more people said no, that they just weren't comfortable doing this. Would there have then been punishment for refusing? Would it have led to an end of the killing of the Jewish population? Would the amount of people killed gone down significantly?
